Zaiton draws flak over 'leave Malaysia' remark
GEORGE TOWN: Kuantan Wanita Umno chief Datuk Zaiton Mat has drawn flak over
her alleged call to those who dislike the Barisan Nasional-led government to
“leave Malaysia and live elsewhere”.
She had allegedly said this after leading about 50 members from the Kuantan and Paya Besara Umno divisions on Friday to lodge a report against the organisers of a purported “Topple the Government” rally on New Year’s Eve.
Penang Gerakan secretary Oh Tong Keong said Zaiton’s remark went against the 1Malaysia aspiration of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, adding that it was “irresponsible and undemocratic”.
“As the ruling coalition, we must come out with people-centric policies to win over those who do not support us, rather than take the easy way out by asking them to leave the country,” he said when contacted.
Penang Pakatan Rakyat backbenchers club chairman Wong Hon Wai said Zaiton’s remark was “ridiculous” and unbecoming of an Umno leader, pressing her to retract the statement.
Wong said the Penang government took positively issues and comments raised by Umno members in the state legislative assembly.
Zaiton was reported to have said that it was easier to complain about the Government’s shortcomings and ignore the hard work done to build peace and harmony.
“It is better for all of us to work together to make this country a better place.
“Some people, who are bent on causing disharmony are not thankful for the benefits,” she added.
